My passion for excellence starts with the patient. As the CEO of the Pharmaceutical Segment of Cardinal Health, I find great satisfaction in the essential role we play in healthcare. We deliver a quarter of all medications prescribed in the U.S. each day across our $90 billion segment. We work with more than 25,000 pharmacies and three quarters of North American hospitals delivering to them products and services that help patients get the care they need.These are medical products, devices and pharmaceuticals that people rely on every day. They make a difference for my family and your family, for my friends and your friends. That’s what keeps me going in the morning—knowing that our work enables caregivers and providers to provide excellent care and improve the lives of others.Every day we are pursuing excellence. I constantly ask my team: “If you were the patient, what would you expect?” Our mission is to ensure patients have the products, in many cases life-saving products, when they need them, while helping providers focus on delivering care, reducing costs, enhancing efficiency and improving quality.Building an effective team is more art than science. It takes a combination of clarity, skills and motivation to achieve results. That’s why I find the most effective leaders:• seek answers to understand what is happening• build trust and empower others• know that they must be uncomfortable to grow• can make the complicated simpleWhen I’m not focused on healthcare, I enjoy spending time with my family exploring the past by taking vacations to historical sites such as Independence Hall in Philadelphia.
