Kerr has made an internationally recognised contribution to colorectal cancer care and research. Published over 300 papers in scientific journals, authored over twenty books, and has been awarded 4 prestigious, international research prizes, including the NHS’s Nye Bevan award for Innovation. He has several patents; has founded two biotech companies (Celleron and Oxford Cancer Biomarkers). Elected Fellow of Academy of Medical Sciences in 2000 , President of European society of Medical Oncology ( 2009-2011) and Fellow of the European Academy of Cancer Sciences (2010). Working with colleagues, he has built two new Institutes of Cancer Medicine in Birmingham (1992-2001) and Oxford (2001-current), and was awarded by UK Government for £100 million investment into cancer research networks. . He Chaired the Cancer Services Collaborative (1999-2003), to deliver redesign programme to improve the NHS’ cancer service (awarded CBE, 2002). He has completed the “Kerr Report” (2006), a 20 year plan to reform Scotland’s NHS. He co-chaired the Anglo-French Scientific committee celebrating the centenary of the Entente-Cordiale (2004) after the Queen and President Chirac nominated cancer research as their joint theme. He edited Europe’s leading cancer journal (Annals of Oncology), has been elected President of the European Society of Medical Oncology (8,000 members). He has established the first Network of India’s top cancer centres (www.indox.org.uk) , turning it into an internationally recognised trials network, has trained many young Indian oncologists and is active in China and the Middle East. He has brought world-wide attention to the looming epidemic of cancer which will claim the lives of more than a million Africans every year. He organised the first ever African Cancer Reform convention in London (2007) and formed a new organisation, AfrOx (www.afrox.org) to aid national cancer planning in Africa. .
