If asked for one piece of advice when it comes to transforming a business, I’ll always say: Think growth first. Most of today’s new technologies will make improvements to your business, but only new ideas will bring growth. I’ve been in the technology space for over 25 years (or really from age 13, when I decided my computer games weren’t exciting enough, so I programmed my own!), starting in development and now architecting multi-vendor solutions to transform businesses as well as state and local government. It means I’m comfortable advising developers, architects, and right up to the C-suite on the business value of a technology solution. Today, my particular specialism is in exploring how new technologies can transform and grow businesses. The biggest impact on businesses in the next 3-5 years will be from the likes of IoT, real-time analytics, APIs, low code application development, artificial intelligence and especially Blockchain. If a lack of knowledge is making you hesitate, I’m happy to demystify them and help you identify opportunities for growth. But often it’s not the technology itself that CIOs and CTOs are grappling with, it’s the speed of change. Sometimes businesses just can’t change quickly enough, and are getting consumed by companies that can move faster. Sometimes it’s the fragmentation of IT that causes issues. Different business units won’t wait for IT to implement a new technology when they have the aptitude and agility to do it themselves – often leading to dangerous security holes. Then there’s moving to the cloud: which workloads to move; how to monetize them; how to avoid being tied to one vendor; how to manage multiple solutions. These are issues that I and my team at Software AG help with every day, and every piece of advice or solution we recommend has the growth of your business at its heart.
