The stories that unfold at this intersect can rival the most exciting Hollywood thrillers! Some stuff about me. I tend to be a genetically positive, glass half full type. As such I sometimes drive negative cynics crazy. This suits me just fine, as they drive me crazy too. They're like cancer for an organization anyhow. Always remember: it's more about what you *can* do as opposed to what you can't do... I believe in failure as a business / development tool. In fact, one of my least favorite, lame business platitudes is: "failure is not an option." Wrong. Failure is often a great option, and it means you're actually *doing* something. The value of failure is measured in how you respond to it. If failure wasn't a valuable tool Carl Daikeler wouldn't have banked $700M on a single product, but only after consecutive failure / improvement iterations on an infomercial. I love being around smart people, and I love empowering them (if I can) to do their thing, whatever that may be. Folks like this are an inspiration, whether you report to them, they report to you, or you're in their orbit. Talent begets talent: this is the key to building great teams. One of the coolest things is seeing someone on my team take a project I've done and improve it exponentially. I'm a believer in recognition: if people rock, it needs to be called out and recognized. Managers should do this early and often, if it's warranted. Knowledge workers, by definition, add value to information. So don't stand in their way.
