When Burgess & Niple was established in 1912, the science of water management was in its infancy. Roads were for horses and carriages. And nobody had heard of environmental assessment. Through all of the changes in the past century, B&N gained first-hand experience and a reputation for high quality work along the way. We have designed roads, buildings, dams, tunnels, bridges, sewers, and hydroelectric power plants. We inspect, survey, study, develop and plan. We have pioneered many techniques, including breakthroughs in water treatment and new approaches to bridge inspection. As technology develops, we continue to work on the leading edge, always seeking innovative and cost effective solutions.

I have had a long and professionally fulfilling career at Burgess & Niple, formally Bengtson, DeBell, Elkin and Titus, 34 years. I made a life style choice when I graduated from VT to live and raise my family where i grew up, in Warren County Va. As it turned out, was the correct decision. As many of you know my Son SSGT Arthur “Bunky” Woods, SOC, Retired was wounded in Action in Baghdad Iraq. The close knit community came together to support my family in our time of need as did Burgess & Niple. A small town response to a huge need. However back then there were no private consulting firms out that way. To practice my chosen Profession commuting to the city was my only option. 34 years ago my commute was 45 minutes each way, now it is 1hour and 45 minutes each way. So after 34 years, on or about February 2015 I will leave the company to spend less time on the road and more time with my grandchildren. I would like to keep working but closer to home. I am not necessarily looking for an engineering position, something interesting without the commute. A few of my strong suits is being able to look ahead to uncover land mines that could impede progress or the objective, working with the public, like construction.
