George Wilson has worked for 50 years in a range of wildlife, environmental, agricultural conservation and disease management occupations. His experience covers surveys, ecological research, Indigenous land management, advice to governments and industry on resource management strategies, animal quarantine and diseases, and animal welfare and production. He has had 20 years in private employment as a veterinarian, in tourism and in aviation. He is Honorary Professor at the Australian National University, Fenner School of Environment and Society. He has published more than 180 papers, reviews, wildlife management plans, chapters and written three books. George is principal of consultancy company Australian Wildlife Services. His qualifications are MVSc (Uni of Syd) and PhD in Zoology (University of Aberdeen). He is also a commercial pilot and aircraft owner who has conducted extensive aerial surveys of wild animals. He has over 4400 hours aeronautical experience and an instrument rating. In 2021 he was made a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) Special interests: * enabling increases in distribution and abundance of threatened species through private sector based initiatives * integration of kangaroos into rangeland pastoral production to reduce methane emissions and improve kangaroo welfare. Millions starved in the drought through neglect. on altruism and tourism opportunities. * integrating traditional knowledge and science to support sustainable Indigenous land management * obtaining carbon credits for reducing methane through low emission meat from kangaroos * developing kangaroo utilisation so that it improves kangaroo welfare, stabilises population and avoids waste by bringing benefits to landholders on whose properties kangaroos occur. * setting strategic research priorities particularly in natural resource and wildlife management * veterinary wildlife services including capture of animals with tranquilisers * wildlife population assessment, aerial surveys and habitat management * wildlife-based ecotourism
