Dr. Carmichael is Chief Executive Officer of Promontory Financial Group Australasia (PFGA). Dr. Carmichael advises clients on regulatory relations, risk management, strategy and governance. He is also an expert in regulatory structure, design and effectiveness. He was, until June 2003, the inaugural Chairman of the Australian Prudential Regulation Authority (APRA) which has responsibility for regulating and supervising banks, insurance companies and pension funds. His career includes senior positions in a 20-year career with the Reserve Bank of Australia, seven years as Professor of Finance at Bond University, and appointment to a number of Government inquiries including the Wallis Inquiry into the Australian financial system, and the Queensland Government's Audit Commission. In addition to his full-time positions, he has served on a number of Government and private sector Boards. In the past decade he has served as Chairman of: Tactical Global Management Pty Ltd; the Australian Financial Institutions Commission; the Queensland Office of Financial Supervision; and Starland Pty Ltd . He has served as a member of the boards of Colly Cotton Ltd, Atlantic 3 Funds Management, and the Queensland Treasury Corporation. He has also held honorary positions as a member of the Councils of Bond University and All Saints Anglican School. Dr Carmichael has published over 40 professional articles in a number of the world's top economics and finance journals, including the American Economic Review and Journal of Finance. He is also the author of several books including The Development and Regulation of Non-Bank Financial Institutions, with Michael Pomerleano of the World Bank. Dr Carmichael has a Ph.D in economics from Princeton University, and honours Bachelors and Masters degrees in Commerce from the University of NSW. In 1995, Dr Carmichael was awarded an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) for service to finance, education and the community.
