I am a professional who has spent my early years in the trenches learning multiple aspects of IT abilities and limitations. I started as a jack-of-all trades at a small ISP where I gained a great deal of technical knowledge, but more importantly learned to see things from an end user perspective after many nights of providing technical support. Experience at a regional, then national, VAR provided more experience and certification from most major manufacturers (MS, Citrix, Cisco, Sun, RSA) as well as platform agnostic security certifications (CISSP, GCIH, CEH) and eventual accreditation for performing PCI audits. IT consulting and security auditing was more satisfying than simple server configurations because it allowed me to demonstrate how IT could be used to solve business problems, not simply be boxes on a desk. NaviSite provided further ability to engage in the more business-oriented side of IT and I have been able to leverage both my technical background to talk to engineers as well as the consultative skills to understand what customers ask for and need. I have been privileged to help build an enterprise class cloud computing platform from the ground up and enjoy the continual adjustments that keep it best in class. I enjoy seeing technology make a difference in the way a business can be run rather than simply implementing a service because that's what everyone else is doing. IT should always remember that it is a means to an end, not the end itself; we are here to keep all of the other goods and services in the world flowing as efficiently as possible.
