I have served at Multnomah University and Seminary in Portland, Oregon since 1999 when I finished my doctoral studies at King’s College London under the late Colin Gunton. Most of my writings are in the areas of Christian theology and theology of culture. They include The Word of Christ and the World of Culture: Sacred and Secular through the Theology Karl Barth (Eerdmans, 2003); Trinitarian Soundings in Systematic Theology (editor; T. & T. Clark International, 2005); Consuming Jesus: Beyond Race and Class Divisions in a Consumer Church (Eerdmans, 2007); Exploring Ecclesiology: An Evangelical and Ecumenical Introduction (co-authored with Brad Harper; Brazos, 2009); New Wine Tastings: Theological Essays of Cultural Engagement (Cascade, 2011); A World for All? Global Civil Society in Political Theory and Trinitarian Theology (co-edited with William F. Storrar and Peter J. Casarella; Eerdmans, 2011); Connecting Christ: How to Discuss Jesus in a World of Diverse Paths (Thomas Nelson, 2012); Evangelical Zen: A Christian’s Spiritual Travels with a Buddhist Friend (with a foreword and responses by Zen Buddhist Abbot Kyogen Carlson, Patheos, 2015); and Beatitudes, Not Platitudes: Jesus' Invitation to the Good Life (Cascade, 2018). My current research projects include a Trinitarian social ethics for IVP Academic in addition to works on missional theology. I also serve as editor of Cultural Encounters: A Journal for the Theology of Culture, and write regularly at my Patheos blog column titled “Uncommon God, Common Good.”I have recently completed overseeing a “Science for Seminaries” grant at Multnomah Seminary through the American Association for the Advancement of Science’s Dialogue on Science, Ethics, and Religion program.
