HDL Engineering Consultants, LLC. is an Alaskan consulting firm specializing in civil, geotechnical, transportation, and arctic engineering, environmental and earth science, surveying, and construction management for government and industry. Founded in 2000, HDL has grown to a full-time staff of 70 engineers, surveyors, geologists, environmental scientists, construction managers, and support staff with offices in Anchorage and Palmer. The principals represent more than 70 years of expertise in one of the most challenging places on earth.

Tallak “Tuck” Maakestad is a professional land surveyor with significant experience and expertise in estimating, contracting, managing and production of large and complex land surveying projects, start to finish. Tuck’s work has included surveys for state and federal highways and airports, various municipalities, BLM cadastral surveys, USFS, USFWS, US Army COE and other clients. He has performed control surveys, boundary surveys, subdivisions, platting, ALTA land title surveys, design topographic surveys, aerial LiDAR / photogrammetric control surveys, hydrographic surveys, right-of-way surveying & mapping, and construction staking. He has managed a large surveying department having nine Professional Land Surveyors, up to five survey crews and up to fifteen personnel. Tuck’s foundational surveying experience began in 1972 with a wide variety of land surveying work. In January 1980 he became registered as a Professional Land Surveyor, and performed many large projects in Arizona and Oregon prior to moving to Alaska in 1995. Tuck has managed and performed a wide variety of projects across Alaska for a diverse client base. Tuck currently manages projects in HDL's large survey department of 18 staff, and regularly provides project supervision, staff mentoring and quality control.
