I started with EllisDon as legal counsel, but I've always had a passion for organizational structuring. So, when EllisDon needed a new head of People & Culture, I applied. My background wasn’t HR specific, but I wanted to reinvent the position and help strengthen EllisDon’s unique culture. I think it’s because of our culture, which is centred on people pursuing their passions and defining their own careers, that the CEO, Geoff Smith, gave me the job and a chance to make a difference. Immediately upon taking the role, Geoff and I embarked on what we called a 'Listening Tour', where we sat down with employees in every office across the country. Our coworkers told us that they wanted to take a much more active role in learning and we delivered this as a communication and learning platform that lets employees get in touch with the person most likely to have the answers they need. It's a community that connects all of our people and encourages everyone to share knowledge and just stay in touch. The tour also led to the creation of EDge Ahead, a performance review process that helps our people develop their careers. It asks everyone to set career goals and then it tasks management with being accountable to the goals that their people set. Since the tour and performance review revamp, we’ve launched many more initiatives that support EllisDon’s unique ability to design, finance, construct, equip, operate, and manage anything that can be built. Our industry-spanning capabilities mean that my department is tasked with finding the best and brightest from countless disciplines. Today, we have musicians-turned-lawyers and MFAs-turned-construction-superintendents and I find it immensely rewarding to work with people from all walks of life as they find success in their careers.
