Research Program Leader
The Bureau of Meteorology is an Executive Agency of the Australian Government for providing weather services to Australia and surrounding areas.
I am a research meteorologist with expertise in the areas of forecast verification and applied meteorology. I am leading an initiative to improve the Bureau of Meteorology's measurement and communication of its forecast quality. I also hold an international science leadership role in the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) where I lead a High Impact Weather flagship project on value chain approaches to evaluate the weather warnings. I enjoy working in multidisciplinary teams to develop solutions for improving public safety and impact management during hazardous weather. Following the deadly 2016 thunderstorm asthma event in Melbourne I helped deliver a world-first forecasting system for epidemic thunderstorm asthma. I have also help develop forecast systems for bushfire smoke, heatwave, and flooding rain. Tools I developed for object-based and neighbourhood verification of spatial forecast performance have been adopted internationally. I enjoy mentoring younger scientists and have co-supervised five PhDs.
