My name is Bryan Blair. I’m a senior at East Longmeadow High School in East Longmeadow, MA. In order to graduate each senior is required to complete a research paper on the topic of their choosing. Seniors are also required to present their research to a panel of judges. My research paper will explore the question: “What are employers looking for when hiring a candidate?” I have observed that recent college graduates are having a much harder time finding employment in there field of study than any previous generation. I believe the best way to understand why is to survey people in positions that require interviewing and hiring recent college gradates. I am requesting that you complete a short, anonymous survey to help me gather my research data. I am hoping to receive genuine, candid responses from each of my survey participants. The hypothesis of my research is that the higher education system in America often promotes unrealistic expectations regarding how their degree programs will prepare graduates for employment. I believe that the real issue behind recent graduate unemployment is that colleges and universities do not provide many of the skills or life experiences required to produce successful employees. There seems to be a dis-connect between what students are learning in college and the skills required by employers. Your survey responses will be invaluable in helping me to validate my hypothesis or gain an alternative understanding from my research. Many of the questions are multiple choice, but some have text boxes that allow you to elaborate as much or as little as you’d like in your response.
