Leadership is a concept in which I strongly believe and is much more than being in a management position within an organization. During my career, there are times when being a manager is important, but leadership is an individual choice that sets people apart when looking at high-performing teams. Leaders can be found at all levels of a team, and the person heading up the team needs to provide a good balance of both leadership and management skills to help the team realize their full potential. • Know your team and their individual strengths. Understand the personal dynamics people have with each other that can directly affect team and project performance. • Listen to those around you. Really listen. Leave the “not invented here” thoughts behind and recognize what skills and knowledge others can bring to a project. Just because someone would do something differently than you doesn't make it “wrong”, and it could be an excellent solution to the challenge being addressed. • Make decisions. Efforts can be slowed or become stagnant due to a lack of decision-making. I solicit input from my team and others around me, gather facts relevant to the decision, and then make decisions with confidence. But I do not hesitate to change direction if new information indicates there is a better course of action.
