Professor of Nursing
The University of Pittsburgh is among the nation's most distinguished comprehensive universities, with a wide variety of high-quality programs in both the arts and sciences and professional fields.
I am pursuing NIH funded research in cardiovascular acute and critical care. I am examining prediction models for cardiorespiratory instability in monitored in-patients in order to assist nurses in identifying unstable patients earlier or, ideally, applying preemptive interventions. In another line of research I am examining myocardial dysfunction after subarachnoid hemorrhage from the standpoints of both potential causes and consequences. I am a tenured full professor at the University of Pittsburgh and teach at the graduate level in the Acute Care Nurse Practitioner Program, the Adult-Gerontology Clinical Nurse Specialist Program, and the DNP and PhD programs. I have more than 40 years of critical care nursing experience, including over 20 years as an Acute Care Nurse Practitioner at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. I have collaborated in the design of curriculum guidelines and program standards for the National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties. I was a member of the Board on Certification for Acute Care Nurse Practitioners of the American Nurses Credentialing Center. I am also a contributor to the 2006 and 2012 revisions of the Scope of Practice and Standards of Care for Acute Care Nurse Practitioners. I am a peer reviewer for Heart & Lung, American Journal of Critical Care, Journal of Critical Care, among others. I was a member of the Allied Health Professionals Credentials Review Committee of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center-Health System from 1999-2014. I am a Fellow in the American College of Critical Care Medicine, Society of Critical Care Medicine, and the American Academy of Nursing. I am also the recipient of the Society of Critical Care Medicine’s Norma J. Shoemaker Award for Excellence in Critical Care Nursing, and have served as both Chair of the Nursing Section and Chair of the Research Committee for the Society of Critical Care Medicine.
