As Chief Inclusion & Diversity Officer and Chief People Officer, belonging is my North Star, and my goal for inclusion and diversity at Marsh McLennan is that every one of our people feel that they belong here. When I first started this dual role, a colleague asked me, “How many people are on your team?” I responded, “80,000.” Because, for diversity to work, all 80,000 of our people must embrace and contribute to it daily. At Marsh McLennan, we sell ideas. If we all feel like we belong and see ourselves represented here – whether we look up, down, left, or right – we bring our best thinking, our best ideas, to the table. When we elevate our people, we elevate the organization. Funnily enough, I created my first diversity report back in the early 90’s – before anyone really knew what that was – during my time at USAA. I wanted to connect with other people who looked like me, so I started by manually searching for every employee – one by one, all 2,500 people – and when I was done, I gave my boss the results of what I’d found. Before I knew it, I was promoted to a role in Employee Relations and there, I worked with managers to set up a hiring program to bring on more diverse talent. That was the spark that led me to where I am today. I feel destined for this time and role, and I love the work because it’s not about me – it’s about making a difference and creating an impact for the next generation. There is a framed photo of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on my wall where he says, "The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy." There are times when the right thing may not be common or popular, but it’s about where you stand, and standing for what’s right. That’s what I believe. In addition to my roles as Chief Inclusion & Diversity Officer and Chief People Officer, I am the Executive sponsor for both the Marsh McLennan Race Advisory Council and Black Leadership Program. I am also a strategic, collaborative Human Resources Executive who advances large-scale change and increases revenues, market share, and employee satisfaction by designing and executing programs that drive results against aggressive business goals.
