Kele Stewart is a lawyer, professor and child advocate. Her longstanding passion for children's issues came full circle in her legal career. Prior to law school, she was a case manager for children in foster care, the same clients she now represents in her role as a clinical professor at University of Miami School of Law. As co-director of the Children & Youth Law Clinic at the University of Miami, she handles cases and policy projects on behalf of children in the foster care system. During the 2011-2012 academic year, she was a Fulbright Scholar working on child protection policy in her native Trinidad and Tobago. She was instrumental in the 2017 launch of First Star University of Miami Academy, a 4-year college prep program for high school students in foster care.Professor Stewart has diverse legal experience at leading firms, having worked as a corporate litigator at Simpson Thacher & Bartlett and White & Case, and a voting rights attorney at Brennan Center for Justice. Since moving to Miami in 2005, Kele has sought additional ways to serve the community. She is a mentor with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Miami, and served on the Advisory Board of Florida's Children First. She has held board positions for the Caribbean Bar Association and the Wilkie D Ferguson Junior Bar Association, and was appointed by the Secretary of the Department of Children & Families to the Independent Living Services Advisory Council. She was a 2014 Fellow in the New Leaders Council (NLC) Institute and subsequently served on the Executive Board of the NLC Miami Chapter.
