I've lived an R rated life for most of my years. Over half my breaths have been in urban landscapes that most people never visit: gay bars, escort services, crack houses, state prisons, mental wards, and detox centers. The sound of a man's suicide fall, landing not 10 ft from me, has forever burned itself into my synapses. I've come home smelling of beer and smoke without ever taken a drink or drag. My heart has broken at the bedside of a friend dying with AIDS. It broke again when I stared into the vacant, glue-sniffers eyes as the paper bag did it’s hellish crinkle - expansion, into the eight year olds mouth. I walked among, lived and partied with male prostitutes for over twenty years. I'm fairly certain I'm the only Roman Catholic clergyman to hang out with male prostitutes and not make the cover of Time Magazine. Then four little carbon-based bipedal life forms came into mine and it was time to move away from the R rated life and towards the G.Getting to G didn’t happen all it once. It's grown over time. The transition came along by the looming twilight of my ailing parents which necessitated a move from the urban streets of Chicago to the treelined suburban home of my youth. These last five years held plenty of R rated moments in caring for my father and the devastation external radiation therapy did to his internal organs. After he died it was no picnic watching Alzheimer's take the mind and body of my mother; but not her soul. Both elders have since left this globe for a better place. Now, the four bipeds and their beautiful mother, 21 years my wife, and I have embarked on a new adventure. G rated for sure but not without challenges of its own. Life is such a grand adventure.
