I am very lucky: I am a public librarian, and find that the people I serve and the colleagues I work with are a real pleasure to serve, for the most part. It also seems to be the kind of work that, the better you try to be at it, the better you become as a person. Which is nice, or at least not evil. I am also fortunate to specialize in the field of reader's advisory, which means conversing with people about books and reading and helping them find other good stuff to read. Which is really fun and challenging work. Another great thing I get to do, both for the library where I work and for some other folks (see below), is write articles and book reviews and columns and blog posts, about books and culture and stuff that I find interesting, or that my patrons are interested in. All in the city I grew up in and love. Plus I get to go around and speak to groups and conventions all around the country about our shared work and interests, which is also something I deeply enjoy.
