I remember sitting in a large conference room in a medical testing facility in Mumbai, India, when I learned a lesson that would support me in my career as a leader. I was out of my element, working onsite in a foreign country for Specialty Labs, leading a team responsible for the automation of analog medical testing processes. I found the local team reluctant to change and unclear on the reasoning behind the change. I realized at that moment that my job was more than to convey technical details. It was necessary to communicate at a human level, and ensure people feel heard. My career is decorated with technical accomplishment. I’ve built data centers, implemented disaster recovery plans, moved workloads to the cloud, and led the delivery of multi-million dollar software projects. However, the most impactful moments are always personal connections—the ability to help people understand the "why" and commit to the direction. Whether it’s moving an organization from Waterfall to an Agile, SCRUM process as I did at Glidewell Laboratories, or automating very manual processes as I accomplished at Specialty Labs, I understand that successful implementation is more than nailing the technical details. I’ve found that allowing employees to provide feedback through Town Halls and employee performance management while supporting employees to achieve success through goal setting and measurement tends to create confident employees and teams, which leads to more successful outcomes. This is my personal mission.
