I have served as general counsel of Genesis Healthcare since 2008, and have been in-house counsel in the post-acute care / health care field since 1997. Prior to joining Genesis in 1997, I served a one year clerkship with a federal district court judge in the Eastern District of Pennsylvania and spent 3+ years in private practice at a Philadelphia law firm in the areas of health care and corporate law. During my time at Genesis, we have been both public (currently) and private, been in and out of bankruptcy (2000-2001), have grown significantly by acquisition including the acquisitions of or mergers with private and public companies, and accomplished a significant spin off of certain ancillary businesses. Our in-house legal department has grown from 3 people in 2008, to over 50 great people today, including attorneys, paralegals, and other professionals - including nurses) as we moved many legal functions in-house to improve quality and cost-efficiency. We see every kind of legal issue - we are a large employer (over 90,000 employees including unionized labor), we are a landlord and a tenant, we acquire and divest assets, we are a public company, we have taken a case to the US Supreme Court (and won), we litigate many cases including commercial, employment and patient care litigation, we are a vendor of services and a recipient of services from many vendors, we have complex regulatory issues, and much more. I focus my practice on governance, mergers and acquisitions, real estate, contracts and health care law. I also serve as corporate secretary, I serve on the Company's management committee, and I am involved in government relations.
