Since 2007, I am leading a research group at Freie Universität Berlin (Germany), and since 2013 I am full professor there, mainly at the department of Computer Science and Mathematics, with co-appointments in Physics and Chemistry. Since 2015 I also hold a visiting appointment at Rice University, Houston (Texas). We develop Machine Learning & Artificial Intelligence methods for the Sciences as well as Physics-motivated methods for Machine Learning. My research is highly interdisciplicary, involving Statistics, various computational methods, Physics, Chemistry and Biology. We focus on applications in the computer-driven understanding and design of complex dynamical systems such as biomolecules, biomolecule-drug interactions, the immune system and signalling in biological cells. My education consists of a dual PhD in Computer Science and Biophysics at Heidelberg University (2006), I have done a Master of Science in Computer Science in Cork (2002), Ireland and a Bachelor in Electrical Engineering from Stuttgart (1999). I have spent one year in an Artificial Intelligence startup in Frankfurt (1999-2000) and was a trainee for Electrical Engineering with Bosch GmbH in 1996-1999.
