Your Networks Are Compromised – In the modern workspace, your network is ANYWHERE your employees conduct work. On their smartphone, in an airplane or at the coffee shop. Employees in the modern workplace expect, and increasingly are expected to, access company services and data well beyond the confines of the traditional office space. Do you have control of ALL your networks? Absolutely not!!! I was recently hired to lead Enterprise wide Information Security for Chenega Corporation. A company with subsidiaries addressing multiple customer profiles, including the Department of Defense, Intelligence, non-military Federal agencies, hospitality, healthcare, utilities, and even food services. Defining a security model that addressed the diverse demands of our business units while understanding the nature of today’s office workspace was the initial challenge that I had to solve. I embraced an “Data Centric” and “Risk based” approach to securing our enterprise data and systems. Utilizing digital rights and encryption to all documents ensures an active need to know is still present no matter where the document ultimately ends up. Employing risk based access provides a real-time assessment of risk based on: - The state of the asset (company issued, compliance to approved baseline) - Network information (public, private, trusted, geo-location, known bad) - Restrictions on services/data requested (HIPAA, ITAR) Your networks are compromised – embrace it within your security model!
