Senior Fellow and Policy Director
The Brookings Institution is a private nonprofit organization devoted to independent research and innovative policy solutions. For nearly 100 years, Brookings has analyzed current and emerging issues and produced new ideas that matter-for the nation and the world.
Recognized expert who leads the Brookings Metropolitan Policy Program’s advanced and inclusive economy activities, with a focus on regional technology ecosystems, digitalization, and economic development. Published extensively on digital trends, automation, advanced industries, and regional development issues. Most recent work has focused on automation and artificial intelligence and their role in building an “advanced economy that works for all.” My most recent publication looked at “Automation and Artificial Intelligence: How Machines Are Affecting People and Places.” Prior to that I authored “Digitalization and the American Workforce.” Additional work over the last year has been focused on the divergence of community economic performance and the divide between “superstar cities” and “places left behind.” I hold a bachelor’s degree from Harvard College and a master’s degree in American studies from the University of California, Berkeley.
