Bio

Dr. Yinhai Wang is a professor in transportation engineering and the founding director of the Smart Transportation Applications and Research Laboratory (STAR Lab) at the University of Washington (UW). He also serves as director for Pacific Northwest Transportation Consortium (PacTrans), USDOT University Transportation Center for Federal Region 10. He has a Ph.D. in transportation engineering from the University of Tokyo (1998) and a master's degree in computer science from the UW. Dr. Wang’s active research fields include traffic sensing, e-science of transportation, transportation safety, transportation bigdata, etc. He has published over 160 peer reviewed journal articles and delivered more than 150 invited talks and nearly 270 other academic presentations. Dr. Wang is an elected governor for the ASCE Transportation & Development Institute (T&DI) Board and served as President of T&DI in 2019. He is also a founding co-chair of the ASCE Connected and Autonomous Vehicle Impact Committee and a member of the Artificial Intelligence and Advanced Computing Committee of the Transportation Research Board (TRB). He was an elected member of the Board of Governors for the IEEE ITS Society from 2010 to 2013 and currently serves as a member of the IEEE Smart Cities Technical Activities Committee. He was a general co-chair for the First (2015) and Third (2017) IEEE International Smart Cities Conferences, and the 2018 and 2020 ASCE International Conferences on Transportation and Development (ICTD). Additionally, Dr. Wang is associate editor for three journals: Journal of ITS, PLOS One, and Journal of Transportation Engineering. He won the ASCE Journal of Transportation Engineering Best Paper Award for 2003 and ITE Transportation Education Council Innovation in Education Award in 2018.
