Pamela J. Smith has a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Wisconsin (1992), with specializations in the fields of international economics and econometrics. She has been a faculty member in the Department of Applied Economics at the University of Minnesota since 1998. Before that, she was a faculty member at the University of Delaware and at Concordia University in Montreal, Canada. Dr. Smith’s research focuses on topics in international economics, with an emphasis on international trade and policy, intellectual property rights, and trade in genetically modified crops. Her research appears in numerous journals including the Journal of International Economics, Review of International Economics, American Journal of Agricultural Economics, Journal of World Intellectual Property, Journal of Urban Economics, and National Bureau of Economics Research working paper series. Her recent publications include the authored book entitled "Global Trade Policy: Questions and Answers" (2014) and publications on international technology transfers, that were commissioned by the Copenhagen Consensus Center to advance the United Nations Post-2015 Development Agenda. Dr. Smith teaches the core courses in international trade and policy for the M.S. and Ph.D. programs in Applied Economics at the University of Minnesota. Dr. Smith has also taught in a variety of special training programs for government officials. Examples include the Bangladesh Training Program sponsored by the International Food Policy Research Institute; the Executive Masters in Rural and Industries Management Program at Olsztyn University of Agriculture and Technology (in Poland); and the Institute for Global Studies of the Carlson School of Management.
