George Basara was a shareholder in the labor and employment section of Buchanan Ingersoll & Rooney PC. Aside from litigating labor and employment cases, George serves as a trusted advisor to Human Resources professionals who seek his legal and practical opinions regarding the application of ever-changing labor and employment laws to their particular workplaces. He regularly trains managers in the areas of discrimination/labor law by teaching them to be proactive in spotting employee-related issues before they grow into larger legal problems, thereby helping businesses to avoid litigation and create optimal work environments. George also assists companies who have unionized workforces by advising them of the NLRB processes, which lead to unionization, negotiating labor agreements and litigating matters before the NLRB and in arbitration.George’s practice has significantly expanded to include the litigation of state and federal wage and hour class/collective actions for a variety of industries, including the telecommunications, health care, steel and gas industries. His cases include the defense of millions of dollars in overtime claims relating to time spent donning and doffing safety gear, the misclassification of non-exempt employees, failure to pay for time spent during lunch breaks, misclassification of independent contractors and off-the-clock work. He also has significant experience in assisting clients who suffer damage to their business from employee theft of property and trade secrets, unlawful competition in violation of restrictive covenants and as a result of workplace events that involve investigations by OSHA, MSHA and DEP relating to accidents and explosions.
