Professor Anne Wilkinson was the Western Australia Cancer Council Chair in Palliaitive and Supportive Care in the School of Nursing and Midwifery at Edith Cowan University near Perth Australia. In addition, she was also Director of the WA Centre for Cancer and Palliative Care at Edith Cowan University. In her position as senior researcher, Professor Wilkinson has collaborated on a variety of policy and practice research activities with the WA Health Department; the WA Cancer and Palliative Care Network; the Cancer and Palliative Care Research and Evaluation Unit, UWA; the palliative care specialist teams at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital, Royal Perth Hospital, Fremantle Hospital, Joondalup Hospital and numerous primary care and residential aged care providers in Western Australia and nationally. Her current area of focus is on quality improvement and quality measurement in cancer and palliative care services in the acute care setting. Recent research activities have included a state-funded evaluation of an advance care planning intervention for COPD patients, a state-funded implementation and evaluation of the Liverpool Care Pathway (LCP) clinical guidelines in three rural regions in WA. Prior to her joining Edith Cowan University in mid-2007, Professor Wilkinson was a Senior Health Policy Analyst at the RAND Corporation, a public policy think tank in Washington, DC, USA. In addition, she was an Associate Research Professor with the George Washington University Medical School, the George Washington University, Washington, DC, USA. Professor Wilkinson has 20 years of applied health services research and public policy analysis experience, has led numerous mulit-site collaborative research projects and quality improvement initiatives (both national and regional), and has published numerous articles on her research focusing improving health care systems to more effectively support appropriate advanced chronic illness and end of life care.
