I am a molecular biologist and plant virologist and have been specialising in recent years on the development of novel methods and approaches for the detection of pathogens and the identification of pests. I have a particular interest in the development and deployment of field tests as well as the development of highly parallel laboratory diagnostic techniques, based on microarrays and next generation sequencing. I have managed a large number of R&D projects funded by Defra, RCUK, AHDB, DSTL and the EU and have supervised a total of 21 PhD students. I have published more than 110 peer reviewed articles that have been cited more than 5000 times and have presented regularly at at national and international conferences.
