“What’s your story?” is a question my dad used to ask; it was his way of saying “what’s up?” I always took it as a challenge to come up with something interesting. After all, who doesn't love telling a good story? I had a flashback to this when I was put on the spot with the “what’s your story” question as I was speaking on a panel. This time, it was related to my career path. I paused longer than I should have as I questioned myself. Is my story was interesting enough? Will it live up to expectations? How the heck did I get here anyway? I explained that early in my college days, I knew advertising was my destiny. Within weeks of graduation, a door opened in media and I needed a job. I have a vivid recollection of my interview, trying to remember phrases from the minimal exposure I had to media planning in my advertising courses. I felt like an actor, stumbling to deliver my lines as I ad-libbed about my fascination with consumer insights and brand objectives. Truth is, my fascination was more about getting a foot in the door that could serve as a stepping stone to becoming a latter-day Mad Woman, bouncing from one New York ad agency to the next. That part didn't exactly work. But what did work and continues to serve me well is staying passionate about making an impact in this business by constantly finding new ways deliver creative media – and most importantly, inspiring my team to embrace being invested in the accomplishments of Haworth and our clients.
