JoAnn Z. Ioannou served as the Executive Vice President of Hospital Operations and Chief Nursing Officer at Greater Baltimore Medical Center. In her role, Dr. Ioannou was responsible for identifying, designing and implementing systems for the highest levels of clinical quality and service, patient experience, health outcomes, and optimization of resources towards greater efficiencies in the provision of health care services – all driven by a culture of continuous performance improvement. Dr. Ioannou managed a budget of $500 million and had oversight of 1700+ staff members. She was responsible for the clinical, financial and daily operational activities including all inpatient services, care management services, emergency and crisis response, oncology services, hospital procurement, pharmacy, lab and support services, and nursing education. Her teams handle more than 23,000 admissions and over 52,000 emergency room visits annually. Dr. Ioannou values the importance of collaboration at every level of the organization and worked closely with the Chief Executive Officer and Chief Medical Officer on GBMC’s innovative lean design work. In partnership with the Chief Medical Office, Dr. Ioannou developed a strong dyad leadership model for providers and nurses leading to advanced certifications for the Joint and Spine Center and the Perinatal Program from The Joint Commission. Dr. Ioannou has a proven record of bringing stakeholders together to enhance care access, care delivery and care transition. An example of the importance of collaboration is a partnership with surgical and perioperative leaders, decreasing surgical site infections while obtaining a $3M savings in supplies in one year. Most recently, GBMC HealthCare achieved the 2020 Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award - the first time in its history. Dr. Ioannou earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology from Towson University, a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing from Villa Julie College and a Master of Science in Nursing and a Master of Business Administration and Doctor of Nursing Practice degrees from The Johns Hopkins University.
