Freedom Credit Union was originally chartered, in 1922, as Western MA Telephone Workers Credit Union. From a small office in the telephone company's building, the credit union grew until it found its home on Main Street. As a result of telephone company downsizing and reorganization, the credit union chose to expand to include Select Employee Groups: companies in Hampden County that were approved by our Board of Directors to form a credit union partnership and offer credit union membership through the workplace to their employees. As demand for the benefits of a credit union grew, we applied for community charter. In 2001 membership eligibility was changed to include anyone who lives or works in Hampden, Hampshire, Franklin or Berkshire County. After a long process, the membership voted to change the credit union's name to Freedom Credit Union. It was felt that this name better reflects the current demographics of our members. The bell in our logo is a constant reminder of our roots with the telephone company, and the slogan communication is our foundation" shows that we remember those roots everyday."
