Baseball, Spelling Bees, and Laminate. To most people, those are three very different things. For me, they are the building blocks of a communications career that has allowed me to travel the country with some of the biggest brands in America. It started in the mid-2000s, as I worked my way into play-by-play broadcasting roles in Minor League Baseball, dreaming of appearing on ESPN one day. But in 2011, I was at a crossroads in my personal and professional life. My fiancée lived 4.5 hours away, and the long hours required to work in sports weren’t conducive to starting a family. So I traded in my headset for pen and paper and started out on a journey in the world of public relations. Since then, I’ve worked at two PR agencies, helping brands big and small enhance their public persona through award-winning media relations campaigns. In a roundabout way, I fulfilled my ESPN dream as a communications professional on the front lines of the Scripps National Spelling Bee (which is televised by the network every year). And since 2017, instead of covering sports or spellers, I’m focused on what covers your counter as I help introduce Formica Laminate to the next generation of architects, designers, and homeowners. Oh, and that fiancée I referenced? She’s my wife of 11 years and the mother of my two beautiful daughters.
