Building products, without actually driving a transformation, is basically useless. Here’s what I mean. When I am asked why I do what I do, I say that the adrenaline really kicks in when working with people to think, design, develop, test, launch and scale digital products. Why? Because digital transformation is not just intentionally taking products and processes into the Digital age. It is transforming the company itself. And what I have learned is that transforming its people is simultaneously the most important and the most difficult. So I reflect with tremendous pride when our team members report back how they’ve realized new ways of working and new appreciations for the power of digital. I believe this is the real long-term transformation that a leader can bring to an organization, whether is a large multinational in the services space or a fintech start-up. As a multi-cultural executive, I have 19 years of experience working in 4 countries on 3 continents and with people from all over the world. Although I’ve never worked as an engineer, my technical education as an engineer supports my work in the digital products space, particularly when there’s a need to find a technical solution to a customer experience problem. Some of the impact we’ve made over the years include: •Launching and scaling the myMTN app in Ghana to 1.5m users and to be in the top 10 most downloaded app •Driving the first Agile transformation in Vodafone Group •Launching the first music streaming service in the Caribbean •Launched new digital platforms in Ghana like Ayoba (scaled to >2M users), Chenosis (a new API marketplace) and Mobile Advertising (monetization of the huge amount of data MTN has about customers) The last few years in Africa have taught me that this continent is not only beautiful and with amazing people, but that it also requires digital products “designed” for Africa, not just “exported” to Africa. My ambition is to play an even bigger part of this huge transformation that is leapfrogging Africa to the digital age. In my personal time I love surfing. When I am out there waiting for a wave, I think about the similarities that surfing has with life, with one above all. When you are there trying to catch a wave, you never know if it will be the ride of your life or will smash you, but if you have trained hard you increase the chance of making it a great ride. I apply the same approach to my work: study, learn new things, ask for help when necessary, and play all out so that I am ready for any type of challenge.
