Kurt Calia is a partner in the Silicon Valley office of Covington & Burling LLP, where he practices in the areas of complex civil litigation, patent litigation, intellectual property, life sciences, and patent prosecution. He is a former co-chair of the firm's Patent Group, and he currently serves as the Vice Chair for the Trade Secrets Committee of the Intellectual Property Owner’s Association (IPO). His practice focuses largely on the firm's high technology clients in a wide range of areas including pharmaceutical chemistry, agricultural biotechnology, biomedical devices, nanotechnology, genetics, material science, mechanical devices, business methods, microprocessors, and software. Kurt has significant trial experience in federal and state courts throughout the country, including the International Trade Commission in which he recently represented Samsung in an ITC investigation related to light-emitting diodes. He has also served as trial counsel for a J&J subsidiary concerning an Alzheimer’s disease drug, and as trial counsel in a series of intellectual property cases for Monsanto concerning genetically modified crops. He also has substantial experience in prosecuting and defending trade secrets cases, particularly arising in the context of complex litigation involving other intellectual property claims.Kurt has published and lectured extensively in the area of intellectual property, and previously served as an adjunct Professor of Law at the Howard University Law School. He has received a number of professional accolades, including rankings in IAM Patent 1000 - The World’s Leading Patent Practitioners (2012, 2013), in Legal 500 US in their 'IP: Trade Secrets' category (2009-2013), and in IP Stars 2013).
