I have worked in the field of diversity and inclusion for over thirty years. I led the Insitite's public policy work to help shape Government policy and legal provisions such as the Equality Act 2010. I recently retired from my role as the Public Policy Adviser on diversity and inclusion for the CIPD but continue to work for the Institute as a freelance Associate. I am now Co director of Inclusive Talent Ltd -see www.inclusivetalent .co.uk and help employers to make progress in this challenging and complex field. I have driven a range of research on diversity and inclusion issues including managing diversity and the business case, tackling discrimination on the basis of age and disability, issues related to equal pay, harassment and bullying, as well as race, work–life balance and employing people with criminal records, addressing the challenges of an ageing workforce, the integration of talent management and diversity, practical guidance on gaining traction on progressing diversity and inclusion and framing the future of work through flexible responses to employment practices. I have addressed audiences in various countries and have undertaken work for the Singapore Government on managing an ageing workforce the European Commission and Eqality and Human Rights Commission in Austria and I was invited as a global thought leader on diversity and inclusion by the Society of Human Resource Management in the United States to take part in an initiative to inform the progress of diversity and inclusion in business. I frequently sit on UK Government advisory boards and advisory boards related to the conduct of academic research and have given evidence to House of Commons Select Committees. I was the UK advocate for the European wide initiative on Equal Pays in 2013. I lead the CIPD’s Senior Diversity Network which creates thought leadership in this field. I was awarded an OBE for my services to diversity, in the Queen’s birthday honours list in 2006.
