Technical Director
Beca delivers a variety of consultancy services across the Buildings, Government, Industrial, Power, Transport and Water market segments. We operate from three main "hubs" - Australia, New Zealand and Asia - offering everything from engineering, architecture and planning services, to project and cost management, software technology and valuation services. Beca consults to infrastructure providers including NZ Transport Agency, Auckland Airport, Melbourne Airport and Melbourne Water. In Australia, China and New Zealand, Beca has been assisting major manufacturers of food and beverage products, building breweries and food processing plants for over 20 years. Beca has been working with power and industrial clients in NZ on energy generation and transmission, delivering alternative energy sources such as wind farms, hydro dams and transmission stations. Having helped deliver a number of prominent buildings such as the Sky Tower in Auckland and Macau Tower in China, Beca Buildings is now working on large-scale projects that contribute to the development and use of Environmentally Sustainable Designs. An example of this is Singapore's Zero Energy Building, which aims to generate as much energy from renewable sources as it uses, leading to net zero energy consumption. As well as landmark projects, Beca has an established track record in education, hospitals and correction facilities. Beca consults on systems engineering, business solutions, IT project management and software services, and has developed a number of software and simulation products. This capability has earned Beca commissions across a number of markets including transportation, ports, defence and water.
I have been with Beca since 1995 (my 2nd "life" with Beca), was appointed an Associate in 2002, and have been a Technical Director since 2008. For nearly five years (until January 2014), I held the position of Section Manager - Auckland Building Services (with >100 staff, the largest section within the Beca Group). I have recently handed over the Section Manager responsibilities to three of my very capable colleagues under a new governance structure, allowing me to return to being an engineer and add value to our client's projects. I am a Building Services engineer, with a mechanical design background (ME (Mech) from University of Auckland), who has worked on a range of projects across many different market sectors. As a keen sportsman, I have thoroughly enjoyed taking a lead role on a range of sporting facilities, including the Eden Park Redevelopment for RWC2011. Being involved with the design, successful construction, and later as a spectator watching the All Blacks win was a career highlight. In my previous Section Manager role, I got greatest satisfaction from seeing my staff develop and take on stretch responsibilities. Returning to an engineering and Job Director role, I will enjoy the role of obtaining a brief from our clients, developing the "blank canvas" and creating solutions to achieve outcomes that make our clients happy. I bring over 25 years experience to my projects, and aim to deliver practical innovation to achieve a successful whole building design outcome. I have completed a number of long distance triathlon and marathon events, including two Ironman and six Half-Ironman events over the last decade. I have recently been re-elected for a further 3 year term on the Board of Trustees at Rangitoto College. I have also been a Trustee at North Harbour Stadium since 2010, and enjoy being involved with the development of this facility into a fantastic home for sporting and cultural/entertainment for the benefit of the public.
