Baltimore County Public Schools is committed to providing a safe and secure learning environment for all of our students. Each and every school in our system has safety plans in place for a variety of emergencies and, to ensure that each school continually meets our security expectations, security procedures are reviewed as needed and periodically throughout the year by our Department of School Safety and Security. Schools are required to practice the plans they have in place several times per year so that both staff and students have a complete understanding of what to do should a real emergency arise. We are also very fortunate to have a strong partnership with the Baltimore County Police Department. Through our School Resource Officer Program and the "Keep a Check" Program, there is a police presence in our schools to provide a safe and secure environment for all students and staff.
Not since books were invented has the universe seen such exciting new opportunities to engage students and teachers in the learning process. With the use of digital technology, educators now can focus on immediate, project-based, and student-driven classes and activities that challenge imaginations and instill the essential skills in critical thinking, communication, collaboration, and creativity that are increasingly in demand in the 21st century workplace. My lifelong goal is to help make these opportunities available to every learner and teacher worldwide by championing their benefits and assisting others in their implementation/integration in school systems across the globe. As Executive Director of Innovative Learning for the 25th largest school district in the country, I have spearheaded a movement to transform the Baltimore County Public School (BCPS) system into a model for this type of learning and teaching. Our Students and Teachers Accessing Tomorrow (S.T.A.T.) is a multi-year plan to advance the school system into a complete learning environment featuring 21st century technology in order to prepare globally competitive graduates. I invite you to visit the S.T.A.T. webpage (http://www.bcps.org/academics/stat/ ) to learn more.As you can see, I am very active in professional organizations focusing on education and technology:•Adjunct faculty member, Johns Hopkins University School of Education •Member, Project Tomorrow’s Speak Up Advisory Board •Member, Alliance for Excellent Education’s Technology and Digital Learning Advisory Council (2011-2012)•Board Member, International Society for Technology in Education (2006-2010)•President, Maryland’s Educational Technology Organization, MICCA (2006-2007)•Membership Chair, International Society for Technology In Education (2003-2005)I’m on LinkedIn to stimulate greater discussion about expanding digital convergence to other school systems.
