Marty Schaffel’s first foray into entrepreneurship came at a young age. When he was a kid in Miami, Florida, he made bird feeders and tried to sell them to the neighborhood. He painted mailboxes. He had some success with a lawn mowing business, until he inadvertently blew up a neighbor’s white gravel lawn. He went on to graduate from the University of Florida Warrington College of Business. In 1979 he printed a business card that said “President.” People asked, “of what?” This was the beginning of Audio Visual Innovations, Inc. (now AVI-SPL). By 2008, Schaffel had grown AVI to a $260 million, 1200-employee company. In 2008 AVI merged with Signal Perfection Ltd. to become AVI – SPL. Schaffel sold his remaining shares in 2016. For the past ten years Schaffel has guest lectured at the University of Florida Warrington College of Business. He began teaching his own course at Warrington in summer 2015, and he has since served as an adjunct professor, teaching courses on entrepreneurial leadership and ethics.
