I have been in the private practice of Family Medicine in Encinitas, CA since 1978. I started a practice that now includes 6 FPs and 5 PAs. We emphasize team-delivered comprehensive, coordinated, preventive care, the patient always a part of the team. I began a second "career" with an entry into Organized Medicine when I became involved with the Hospital Medical Staff Section of the California and American Medical Associations in 1985. My passion for supporting the profession has led me into many more positions that enabled ways to effect positive change. They have included being president of the San Diego County Medical Society in 2001, trustee of the CMA since 1994, vice-speaker and then speaker from 2002-2010, president in 2012, and AMA delegate since 2002. I led the SDCMS effort to create a Foundation in 2005, now with its flagship program to connect volunteer doctors to uninsured patients, Project Access San Diego. We created a Commission of ER directors in 2001 which has continued to make the delivery of emergency care in San Diego better for patients and the community. From 1998 through 2001, I led the efforts to reengineer both the SDCMS and CMA. I am the chair of the board of the California Public Protection and Physician Health, Inc., a 501(c)3 corporation recreating a Physician Health Program for the state of California. I was one of the 23 members of Governor Jerry Brown's "Let's Get Healthy California Task Force" in 2012, which proposed a comprehensive package of recommendations aimed at achievable population health improvements. I am expert at parliamentary procedure and at governance of non-profit organizations. I ascibe to the goals described in the book, "Tribal Leadership," to move organizations from Stage 3 to 4 in which the theme is "we are great" as opposed to "I am great," and, occasionally to Stage 5 and "the world is great." I believe that leaders in Medicine can learn much from those concepts born out of business principles.
