Customer Advocacy and Customer Marketing can mean different things in different organizations. For me, they mean directly engaging customers to elevate their voices through our marketing and sales activities. Customer advocates help drive sales efforts and brand awareness. As a customer advocacy leader, what gets me up in the morning is knowing that I will work together with my team to connect with customers and hear what’s important to them personally and professionally. And then when we can match a customer to an opportunity that they are excited about and helps us differentiate ourselves in the marketplace--that’s the home run! When engaging customers, I ask my team to consider the following: • How can we make each interaction valuable for the customer? By offering them opportunities to enhance their individual or corporate brand? Connecting them to peers and experts? Sharing insights? Collecting service or product feedback? • Our urgency is not a customer’s priority. Even though we have deadlines for securing participation or approvals, our customers have day jobs, likely using our software to do them, and we need to build in long enough lead times. • Let’s not “nickel and dime” our customers. Before approaching a customer with a single request, let’s look at our open opportunities and see what can be packaged and presented to the customer at one time.
