I am a data science leader with 20 plus years experience leveraging data to create insights and improve outcomes. My approach to data science blends traditional scientific methods with emerging machine learning and artificial intelligence techniques. I have a particular interest in applying modern advanced methods in ways that are highly transparent, explainable, and actionable. And I value the power of simple, classic methods, wisely applied. Discovering, creating, and integrating unique data sets has been one of the main focuses throughout my career. I often find that being resourceful and persistent about getting the right data is a key to answering the right questions. Much of my career has revolved around the science and practice of win-win relationships. During my time in academia (Wharton PhD, Temple Faculty), my research focused on incentives that align the interests of individuals and organizations. Through my 15 plus years in healthcare, I have used data and science to make care more patient-centered, with a focus on initiatives that mutually benefit patients, providers, healthplans, and other stakeholders. I see effective data science as very much a team sport, and I enjoy leading and coaching teams and building partnerships with colleagues. More information and a few highlights: Have worked at the national level with some of the largest organizations (Kaiser, UHG), early stage <100 person startups, and places in between. Partnered with senior leaders in using large-scale data science to dramatically improve the care experience across 35+ hospitals, leading to the fastest improvement in patient experience ratings among systems nationally. Developed and quickly stood-up social media driven tools to monitor and educate at-risk populations for emergent international health epidemic. Developed large-scale, ‘evidence-based design’ approach, integrating hospital design and clinical data to determine impact of environmental factors on health outcomes.
