My name is Nick Brooks and I have had the privilege to work for and with some great people and companies in the lumber industry. I believe that if you want to be good at something you need to find role models to emulate. I look back on my past career and understand that I am at where I am because of a number of leaders took the time to mentor, coach and sometimes chew my butt to help me grow as maintenance person and as leader. Allthough I may not have got it at the time, guys like Don Brooks, Jim Perry, Gary Knight, Jim Ansley, John Charlo, Bill Highsmith, Mike Razzeto, Jeff Webber, Tom Arlint, Sam Dickey, Tim Olson, Steve Harms, Alan Sherrington, Ryan Beaver, Brent Czaban and Brian Chaney have all significantly helped shape who I am. I am very proud of the fact, over the last 16 years only 2 people that have had work under me experienced a recordable injury. In 2007 I was given a once in a life time opportunity to start a “Green Site“ lumber mill with Weyerhaeuser. The experience of being part of the construction and commissioning of the facility has been invaluable in my growth as leader. The importance of having a group craftsmen and support staff that live and breath continuous improvement has been a key to our success at Santiam. I feel I must support team by making sure they have the great skills, opportunities to use their minds & promote creativity and then hold them accountably for outstanding results. With continued increase in technology in lumber while at the same time facing an unprecedented shortfall in skilled craftsmen, predictive maintenance is at a premium. I have been blessed over the last 7 years to have leaders that shared this value and have allowed us to grow a strong PDM program that pays benefits everyday. I will always be that Logger’s kid raised on a ranch in Priest River. I thank my family who taught me the importance of hard work, treating people with respect, do what you say you’re going to do, and "please" and "thank you" are not optional.
