Wan Kim was first introduced to Smoothie King while studying at Boston University before going on to earn his MBA at the University of California at Irvine. Wan became a huge fan of the concept and opened the first international Smoothie King location in South Korea in 2003. Within six years, Wan had opened 120 stores in South Korea and eventually grew brand awareness to 94 percent on the peninsula. In 2012, Wan approached Smoothie King's founders, Steve and Cindy Kuhnau, to purchase the company with the fundamental goal of pushing the brand to rediscover and reinvigorate the foundational values that differentiate Smoothie King as the standalone pioneer in the quick-service restaurant segment focused on health and fitness. Wan Kim’s strategic vision for Smoothie King draws directly from the international smoothie franchise brand’s mission – inspire people to live a healthy and active lifestyle – and vision – to be a part of every health and fitness journey. Under Wan’s leadership, Smoothie King has experienced unprecedented growth. Between 2012 and 2020, the total store count rose from 533 locations to more than 1,200 restaurants. During the same time frame, the average unit volume increased from roughly $361,000 to $498,000, a compound annual growth rate of 5.5 percent.
