Associate Editor
NCHRA is a local starting point for networking, information, professional development & continued support of excellence in Human Resources.
I'm an award-winning journalist working in online media since September 2004 as Associate Editor for HR News, an online daily news service for members of the Society for Human Resource Management. I write a mix of day-to-day news features and longer-form pieces about business news and trends and my beats include writing about organization & employee development and news for emerging HR professionals. I manage related landing pages and I edit and post articles. I've covered Capitol Hill, reporting on issues such as workplace flexibility, apprenticeships, care-giver and older-worker discrimination, and moderated business conference panels on topics such as DE&I, telework and talent management. I especially enjoy looking for the unusual story angle: * Ghosting--when new hires simply never report to work. * Sob stories--employees who cry during or after a performance review. * Hoarders in the workplace. * Work spouses. * Workplace gardens. * Walking meetings. * The downside of funny and funky e-mail addresses. * The role of luck in career success. * Unusual job titles. I have: * A master's degree in journalism. * Served as managing editor of a monthly Department of Defense journal. * Edited & written internal and external copy for the 2002 Winter Olympics & Paralympics in Salt Lake City, Utah. * Written about consumer issues, personal finance and small businesses for The Salt Lake Tribune. * Taught business communications at a community college. * Freelanced for The Associated Press, Chicago Tribune, Editor & Publisher and regional magazines. * Served as an editor or reporter at newspapers in Indiana, Illinois, Georgia and Utah. * Led a team of reporters. * Collaborated with graphic artists, photographers, videographers and other editors.
