Richard is an Operations Control Team Manager at Renewable Energy Group (REG). A former US Army officer with over 20 years of extensive experience leading, developing, mentoring and team building in complex environments with multiple organizations. He has managed teams from 30 to 1100 personnel. Most recently, as the Professor of Military Science at Iowa State University, he was accountable for the training and leader development of over 150 future Army Officers, his efforts resulted in the organization being ranked as one of the top programs in the country and earned the MacArthur Award 3 consecutive years. His qualifications include conflict resolution, operational planning, critical thinking, budget management, risk mitigation, and social media management. He is also Mentors in Violence Prevention (MVP) trained and has developed programs and systems to combat sexual assault on campus and in the community. Lieutenant Colonel (Retired) Smith holds Masters Homeland Security in Public Health Preparedness from Penn State University and a Masters of Management and Leadership from Webster University and is a 1996 graduate of the United States Military Academy. He is married to the former Holly Wells (USMA '96) and they have 3 children, ages 14, 10, and 6.
