For almost 20 years, I have been involved in managing people in a variety of industries. Over time, I have come to realize that the art of managing people well is a definite, often rare, talent. It requires a well-developed skillset that you must continuously work on honing to be successful. I have also realized that this is what I really love doing. Providing clear communication of organizational goals and expectations in addition to providing the appropriate training, tools, coaching, teaching, and mentoring to direct reports is vital. I do not see any difference between managing a team of professionals in the corporate world and coaching a team of athletes. In both cases, you need to earn their trust, work on perfecting their skills, build up their level of confidence so that they believe in themselves, make them feel that you are in their corner, and have them understand that you are all in it together to win. Creating a win-win environment really helps bring out the best in people. Once you have achieved this, your team will perform at the highest levels.
