Dr ElHayek holds a BS in chemistry from the Lebanese University in Beirut, a MS in Chemistry from UMB and completed his PhD studies in Chemistry/ Sustainable Material Design at the Center for Green Chemistry at the University of Massachusetts Boston/Lowell. His PhD studies were based on exploring the photodimerization mechanism of thymine to tailor mechanical and thermal properties of polymeric materials by exposure to UV light. Dr. ElHayek joined the Biomaterials and BioSurgery Group at Genzyme Corporation located in Cambridge MA as part of the R&D group. He has been trained by some of the most experienced and skilled scientific leaders in the art of Biomaterials, Tissue Engineering and Biosurgery. Many biomedical applications were investigated from Non Fouling Coatings for Implantable Devices and Drug Delivery Systems to Development of Matrices for Cellular Tissue Engineering and Tough Hydrogels as Orthopedic Implants for meniscal and spinal repair along with many others. Due to his expertise in the field, He currently serves as a reviewer for the Journal of Biomedical Materials Research. Dr ElHayek is currently at Ocular Therapeutix™, a pharmaceutical company that is currently engaged in developing sustained drug delivery systems to different ocular tissues targeting a variety of indications ranging from anterior to posterior segment ocular diseases. The vision is to address unmet needs in ophthalmology and ophthalmic surgery by developing first-of-a-kind therapeutic products based on Ocular Therapeutix's proprietary hydrogel technology platform. Ocular Therapeutix™ Inc's approved products, Re-Sure™ and Dextenza as well as the clinically investigated pipeline products are examples of the innovation thrive of the technology platform to develop state of the art sustained release products for global market indications ranging from the ocular surface to the posterior segment of the eye. As the Head of Innovation & External Collaborations at Ocular Therapeutix, Dr ElHayek's role is to insure the company's pipeline growth meets the current and future challenges of ophthalmic drug delivery and explore potential collaborative efforts to evaluate compatibility of clinically successful drugs with the hydrogel platform.
