I am the Managing Partner of CEO.works in Europe, with over 35 years of experience in delivering transformative talent solutions in multinational companies. Prior to taking up a partnership with CEO.works, I worked in senior HR-positions at Unilever before becoming the CHRO at KPN Telecom in 2005. I then became CHRO at ING Bank from 2012-2019, where I developed and implemented the company wide people strategy for over 53,000 employees, while also reducing the HR budget by 20%. I feel my role within CEO.works is a particularly important one given the sudden value destruction that has occurred in many large corporates, family-held companies and Private Equity firms due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This is because my partners and I have noticed that most of these companies – who are often rigorous, risk-aware, and evidence-based in their investment decisions - do not apply that same rigour to talent decisions. These talent decisions (attraction, selection, performance management, dismissal) are often taken intuitively and based on very generic views – and much value fails to be created not because of the investment decision, but because of the flawed accompanying talent decisions. I typically work with the CEO, CFO and CHRO to apply investment decision rigour to people management interventions, which shortens the journey to value creation through: -Identifying where most of the value creation in your company will happen. -Determining the key roles that do the heavy lifting for this value creation. -Defining the critical deliverables and risks of those jobs with investment decision rigour. -Arming the resulting role talent combinations for actual value creation.
