Derrick Cameron is a native of Chicago, IL. Upon seeing "Do The Right Thing" at the age of 11, he set out on a path to his chosen profession. He graduated from Morehouse College in 2000 with a Bachelor of Arts in history. He then matriculated to the graduate school of film at Florida State University, where he graduated in 2002 with a MFA in Motion Picture, Television, and Recording Arts. While in graduate school, Derrick wrote and directed two acclaimed short films entitled "The Man" and "Caroline." "Caroline" was the winner of the 2nd Triggerstreet.com Online Film Festival and screened at the Toronto Film Festival, San Francisco Black Film Festival, and on the RAI channel in Italy. Derrick also produced three short films, most notably the short film "ANTS," which won 1st place in the comedy category at the 2003 College Television Awards and screened at the Cannes Film Festival, both of which Derrick attended. He was also featured in the February 2004 issue of Vanity Fair magazine as one of Budweiser’s New Discovery Filmmakers. Derrick also wrote and directed the 2008 feature film, "Right on Louise." He is also the producer/writer/director of the short films “Cherry Hook” and “It Never Entered My Mind,” which have screened at the Marta Film Festival, Cannes Short Film Festival, Portland Film Festival, among others. Derrick is the past Artistic Director and Executive Director for the non-profit organization Ghetto Film School. He was selected as one of OfficeMax’s Teachers of the Year in 2010. Ghetto Film School is located in the South Bronx (NY), MacArthur Park (LA), and London. In addition to students and educators, GFS is supported by a wide network of corporate sponsors, government agencies, and filmmaking professionals.
